When I begin working with a new client, I ask a lot of questions.
Some are easy, like favourite colours or go-to stores.
Others are a little deeper, like how you want to be seen in the world.
But there’s one question that always tells me more than any of the others:
“What’s your favourite outfit… and why?”
The answers to that single question tell me what you value in your clothes, what makes you feel powerful, and what’s missing from the rest of your closet.
I call that outfit your Superman cape.
What Is a Superman Cape?
Your Superman cape is that one outfit that makes you feel:
- Confident
- Put-together
- Like the absolute best version of yourself
You know the one:
- You’d happily run into an ex while wearing it
- You’d take a full-length selfie without second-guessing it
- You’d walk into a room knowing you belong there
It’s not always flashy. Sometimes it’s a killer pair of jeans and a white tee.
Other times, it’s a statement dress, red lipstick, or your power blazer.
But no matter what it looks like, it feels like you.
Why Can’t Every Outfit Feel Like That? (Spoiler: It Can)
Here’s the truth:
Most of us only have one or two of these “cape” outfits in our wardrobe. The rest? Clothes we kind of like, kind of tolerate, or bought on sale and now avoid wearing.
But that feeling you get from your favourite outfit?
That should be the standard, not the exception.
Let’s stop saving our confidence for special occasions.
You deserve to feel that good every day.
How to Identify Your Superman Cape
If you’re not sure what your outfit is, try this:
Ask yourself:
- When was the last time I felt amazing in what I was wearing?
- What outfit do I always get compliments on?
- What makes me stand up straighter or smile more when I wear it?
Then reflect on:
- What colours were you wearing?
- Was it fitted, flowy, tailored, structured?
- What textures or materials made it feel elevated?
- How did the outfit support what you were doing that day?
Write it down. Take a picture of yourself in it.
This is your baseline.
How to Build a Wardrobe Around That Feeling
Once you’ve found your Superman cape, don’t stop there. Use it as a guide.
1. Create a Closet Filter
When shopping or doing a closet edit, ask:
- “Does this make me feel like my cape outfit?”
- “Would I want to be seen in this on a day that matters to me?”
If the answer is no, don’t bring it home. Or better yet, let it go.
2. Identify Your Style Priorities
Your favourite outfit can reveal your hidden style needs.
For example:
- If your cape outfit is a structured blazer and dark jeans → You probably crave polish and confidence
- If it’s a soft knit dress with sneakers → You value ease, movement, and a little edge
- If it’s bold colours or prints → You want your wardrobe to express your personality
Start building a wardrobe that aligns with those needs.
3. Elevate the Everyday
Let go of the idea that feeling great in your clothes is a treat.
Your Tuesday outfit deserves just as much love as your Saturday one.
Look at your wardrobe and ask:
- Where am I settling?
- Which pieces make me feel just okay?
- What’s stopping me from dressing for joy more often?
You don’t need a whole new closet. You just need more of what works, and less of what doesn’t.
Common Wardrobe Struggles This Helps Solve
“I have a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear.”
→ You’re missing alignment. Start with your cape and build around it.
“I keep buying things I don’t wear.”
→ You’re shopping without a filter. Ask: Would this make me feel like my cape outfit?
“My body has changed, and I don’t feel like myself in my clothes anymore.”
→ Your cape can help reconnect you to what feels good right now, not five years ago.
“I want to love my style again.”
→ You already know what you love, you’ve worn it before. Let’s recreate that feeling on purpose.
Your Closet, Your Confidence
You’re in charge of what you bring into your home, and what you let go of.
You get to raise the bar on what makes the cut.
So the next time you’re thinking of buying something, stop and ask:
“Does this make me feel like I do in my favourite outfit?”
If the answer isn’t a clear yes, keep walking.
Because you deserve a closet full of clothes that make you feel powerful, present, and like yourself, every single day.
Your Style Queen,
S.C.
