How to Find Your Style (Step 1): The Power of Pinterest

by | Trend Watch & Outfit Inspiration

If you’ve ever said,

“I have no idea what my style is,”
you’re not alone. Most women I work with don’t start our sessions with a clear vision of their personal style. But that’s okay, we’re not looking for perfection. We’re looking for patterns.

One of the most effective (and fun) ways to start figuring out your style is with a Pinterest board.

Yes, Pinterest. That site you used to pin wedding dresses and chocolate chip cookies? It’s about to become your new style secret weapon.

Why Pinterest Works for Discovering Your Style

Think of Pinterest as your own personal mood board. You’re not shopping yet, and you’re definitely not committing to anything. You’re just collecting.

The goal?
To gather outfits and aesthetics that speak to you, even if you’re not sure why at first.

This visual collection helps you start noticing patterns:

  • Are you drawn to neutrals or bold colour?
  • Structured or soft silhouettes?
  • Minimalist looks or eclectic layers?
  • Sneakers, heels, loafers, or barefoot in a field?

It’s not about recreating each outfit exactly. It’s about understanding what feels like you.

You Don’t Need to Match the Model

Let’s get one thing clear:
This exercise has nothing to do with body size, shape, or age. The point isn’t to find people who look like you, it’s to find style energy that inspires you.

You don’t need to match the model’s body to love the outfit she’s wearing.
Just like you can pin a cozy Parisian living room without needing crown moulding and a marble fireplace, you can pin a wide-leg trouser look even if you’re not sure how it would fit on your body yet.

Let the board reflect your aspirational style, not your current wardrobe or limitations.

How to Create a Pinterest Style Board

Here’s a simple way to get started:

1. Create a board called something like:

  • “My Personal Style”
  • “Outfit Inspiration”
  • “Fall Style 2024”

2. Start searching terms like:

  • Casual chic outfits
  • Edgy minimalist style
  • Classic streetwear looks
  • Parisian capsule wardrobe
  • Plus-size outfit inspo
  • Fall outfits with sneakers

As you pin:

  • Don’t overthink it, just go with your gut
  • Aim for at least 20–30 pins to start seeing themes
  • Try pinning full outfits, not just individual items

Not Sure Where to Start? Take the Style Icon Quiz

If you’re feeling completely lost and don’t know what to even search for, I’ve got a shortcut for you.

✨ Take this Style Icon Quiz ✨
It’ll help you identify your personal style vibe and give you a few ideas for where to shop based on the result.

Whether you’re more “Alexa Chung in a blazer” or “Tracee Ellis Ross in bold colour,” this quiz helps put words (and visuals) to your instincts.

What to Do With Your Pinterest Board Next

Once you’ve pinned your heart out, take a look at the board as a whole.

Ask yourself:

  • What colours show up the most?
  • What kind of outfits dominate the board? (casual, dressy, polished, playful)
  • What details stand out, like gold jewellery, cropped pants, wide sleeves, sneakers?)

Those are your style clues.

You’ve just built a visual reference guide that will make shopping easier, closet cleanses more intentional, and future outfit planning way more fun.

Finding Your Style Is a Process, But This Is Where It Starts

You don’t need to figure it all out at once. But this first step? It’s powerful.

Pinterest helps you get out of your head and into your instincts. It puts imagery to what you’ve been trying to explain. And more importantly, it gives you permission to explore before you buy.

So if you’re ready to start building a wardrobe that feels like you…

Start pinning.
Then let me help you turn inspiration into outfits that actually work for your life.
